Ralkuli village in Batticaloa District witnesses devastating effects of illegal river sand mining. Excessive extraction of sand from river channels results in wide ranging impacts, including the collapse of the river bank, and loss of riparian land. Moreover, during the rainy season, the villagers face many problems due to flood and often it had made the residents stay in temples and other religious places. Even though sand mining is regulated by law in many places, but is often done illegally causing trouble for both the environment and humans. 

Kanapathipillai Sooriyakumari, a young mobile storyteller trained under the "Mobile Storytelling" program launched by SDJF in collaboration with iVoice and Neelan Tiruchelvam Trust (NTT) wants the authorities to look into this matter and do the justice to the community.
