On 30 September 2017, the United Nations celebrated the International Translation Day for the first time paying tribute to the work of translators who play an important role in bringing nations together, facilitating dialogue, creating understanding and cooperation, contributing to development and strengthening world peace and security.

On 24 May 2017, UN General Assembly adopted Resolution 71/288 on the role of professional translation in connecting nations and fostering peace, understanding and development.

The resolution recognizes that respect for the world’s cultural and linguistic diversity is an essential prerequisite for the promotion of the spirit of openness, equity and dialogue.

It acknowledges the role of multilingualism in the activities of the United Nations and its projection to the world. The resolution introduces multilingalism "as a core value of the Organization, and its pursuit as a means of promoting, protecting and preserving diversity of languages and cultures globally."

The resolution notes that transposition of a literary or scientific work, including technical work, from one language into another language, professional translation, including translation proper, interpretation and terminology is indispensable to preserving clarity, a positive climate and productiveness in international public discourse and interpersonal communication.

Resolution 71/288 invites all member states, organizations of the United Nations system and other international and regional organizations, as well as non-governmental organizations and individuals, to observe International Translation Day, in an appropriate manner and in accordance with national priorities, in order to raise awareness of the importance of professional translation
