Mr. Sudarshana Gunawardana (Attorney-at-Law, Director General, Government Information Department) highlights that the technological development of media has not been able to address the gaps in gender justice. Women are still portrayed in the media based on the presumption that women work in the private sphere, while men work in the public sphere. One of the reasons for this is the media steering is mainly held by men. The other reason can be identified as the lack of mainstream human rights discourse in Sri Lanka.

Today when all types of media have diverged into one digital platform it is vital that we initiate this discourse on media and gender justice. As a first step, a deep and meaningful discussion between the media institutions, owners and rights activists is necessary to address this issue.
