இலங்கையின் மத்திய மாகாணத்தின் தலைநகரமும், மிக முக்கிய நகரங்களுள் ஒன்றும் கண்டி. புத்தரின் புனிதப்பல் உள்ள தலதா மாளிகை உட்பட பல்வேறு சுற்றுலாத் தளங்களும் இங்குள்ளதால் சுற்றுலாப்பயணிகளின் வரவும் அதிகமாக உள்ளது. அத்துடன் பல்லின கலாசார மையமாகவும் இங்கையின் மூவின மக்களும் இணைந்து வாழும் பகுதியாகவும் கண்டி விளங்குகிறது.
இலங்கையில் மிகவும் தனித்துவம் வாய்ந்த பாலங்களுள் ஒன்றாக கருதப்பட்ட சட்டின்வுட் பாலமும் (பேரதெனியா பாலம்) இங்கு தான் இருந்தது. மகாவலி கங்கையின் மேலாக இரண்டு கற்தூண்களுக்கு மத்தியில் 215 அடி நீளத்திற்கு சட்டின்வுட் மரத்தினால் இப்பாலம் அமைக்கப்பட்டதால் சட்டின்வுட் பாலம் எனப் பெயர்பெற்றது. கப்டன் பிரெளனின் தொழில்நுட்ப உதவியோடு லெப். கலோனல் ஜோன் பிரேசர் என்பவரால் வடிவமைத்து கட்டப்பட்ட இப்பாலம் 1904இல் உடைக்கப்பட்டது. காலனிய ஆதிக்ககாலத்தில் கொழும்பில் இருந்து கண்டி செல்வோரிடம் இப்பாலத்தை கடக்க வரி வசூலிக்கப்பட்டதாகவும் அந்த வரியும் கண்டி இராஜ்ஜிய வளர்ச்சிக்கு பயன்படுத்தப்பட்டதாகவும் வரலாற்றுத் தகவல்கள் மூலம் அறியப்படுகிறது.
இவ்வாறு புகழ்பெற்ற பாலமானது தற்போது தற்கொலை செய்வோரின் மையப் புள்ளியாக மாற்றமடைந்துள்ளது. உலக சுகாதார நிறுவனத்தின் தரவுகளுக்கு அமைவாக குறைந்த மற்றும் நடுத்தர வருவாயுள்ள நாடுகளில் ஆண்டுக்கு எட்டு இலட்சத்தை அண்மித்தோர் தற்கொலை செய்துகொள்கின்றனர்.
அண்மித்த வருடங்களில் இலங்கையின் தற்கொலை விகிதம் சடுதியாக அதிகரித்திருப்பதுடன் உலக நாடுகளின் தற்கொலைத் தலைநகரம் இலங்கை என்றும் கூறப்பட்டுவருகிறது. 15 -44 வயதிற்கு இடைப்பட்டோர் அதிக அளவில் தற்கொலை செய்துகொள்வதுடன் ஒவ்வொரு 40 நொடிக்கும் ஒரு தற்கொலை இடம்பெறுவதாக உலக சுகாதார நிறுவனம் குறிப்பிடுகிறது. இலங்கை பொலிஸ் திணைக்கள அறிக்கையின் படி 2018 ஆம் ஆண்டில் 2619 ஆண்களும் 662 பெண்களும் தற்கொலை செய்துகொண்டுள்ளனர். இது தற்கொலை முயற்சிசெய்து இறந்தவர்களின் எண்ணிக்கையே தவிர முயற்சியில் ஈட்பட்டவர்களையும் நாம் கருத்தில் கொள்ளவேண்டும்.
அந்த வகையிலே கண்டி பேரதெனியா பாலத்திலிருந்து (பழைய சட்டின்வுட் பாலம்) மகாவலி கங்கையில் குதித்து உயிரை மாய்த்துக் கொள்ள முயலும் பலரையும் உயிரைக் கொடுத்து காப்பாற்றிவரும் திரு.ராசிக் பரீட் என்ற தம்பி நானாவை சந்தித்தபோது “சாவுறத விட, வாழுறதுக்கு தான் மனத்திடம் அதிகம் வேண்டும்” என்று தன் உரையாடலை ஆரம்பித்தார்.
பேரதெனியா பாலத்திற்கு அருகில் எவ்வித அடிப்படை வசதிகளும் அற்ற பலகைவீட்டில் மனைவி பிள்ளைகளோடு வாழும் திரு.ராசிக் பரீட் 40 வருடங்களுக்கும் மேலாக ஆற்றில் குதிப்பவர்களை மீட்டெடுத்து வருகிறார். அப்பகுதியிலுள்ள மக்களிடம் தன்னுடைய சமூகப்பணியின் மூலம் பிரசித்தமாக இருக்கும் இவர் மோட்டார் வாகனம் திருத்தும் நிலையத்தில் பணியாற்றுகிறார்.
தொடர்ந்து அவரோடு உரையாடும் போது “இளைஞர்கள், யுவதிகள், மாணவர்கள், வயோதிபர்கள், இராணுவவீரர்கள் என பல்வேறு வயதுடையவர்களும் தொழில்புரிபவர்களும் வாழ்க்கையில் ஏற்படும் பயம், விரக்தி, தோல்விமனப்பாண்மை காரணமாக உயிரை மாய்த்துக்கொள்ள முடிவெடுக்கிறார்கள். இன்றைய நவீன உலகில் கைபேசிகளையும் கணிணிகளையும் நண்பர்களாக்கிக் கொண்டிருக்கும் பலருக்கு சந்தோசமான தருணங்களையும் துன்பங்களையும் பகிர்ந்து கொள்ள, ஆதரவாய் ஒரு தோழில் சாய நண்பர்கள் எவரும் இருப்பதில்லை. மேலும் பல பெற்றோர்கள் தங்கள் குழந்தைகளுக்கு “இல்லை” என்ற சொல்லே தெரியக் கூடாது என்பதற்காக கேட்கும் அனைத்துப் பொருட்களையும் வேண்டிக் கொடுக்கிறார்கள். இதனால் அவர்கள் சிறு இழப்புகளையும் ஏமாற்றங்களையும் கூட ஏற்றுக்கொள்ள முடியாமல் தற்கொலை முயற்சியில் ஈடுபடுகின்றனர். 1970 ஆண்டு காலப்பகுதியில் ஏற்பட்ட கலவரங்களின் போதும் பலரை வெட்டி மாகவலி ஆற்றில் வீசியிருக்கிறார்கள். அந்த உடல்களையும் நான் மீட்டுக் கொடுத்திருக்கின்றேன். சுற்றுலாப்பயணிகளும் தவறி ஆற்றில் விழுந்திருக்கிறார்கள். அவர்களையும் நான் மீட்டெடுத்துள்ளேன்” என்றார்.
மேலும் “காசுக்காகவோ, புகழுக்காகவோ நான் இதைச் செய்யவில்லை. இனம், மதம் பாராமல் ஒரு சேவையாகவே செய்கின்றேன். இறந்தவர்களின் உடலை சில நாட்கள் கழித்து மீட்கும் சூழலும் உள்ளது. அப்படியான நாட்களின் எனக்கு சாப்பிடக்கூட முடிவதில்லை. ஒருவரைக் காப்பாற்றுவதற்காக மகாவலியில் குதிக்கும் போது கையில் அடிபட்டு முறிவும் ஏற்பட்டுள்ளது. எனினும் எவரும் உயிருக்கு போராடுகையில் எனது கை வலியைப் பார்த்துக் கொண்டிருக்க முடிவதில்லை. இப்போது எனது மகனும் என்னோடு சேர்ந்து ஆற்றில் குதித்து பலரையும் காப்பாற்றி வருகிறார்” என மகனைப் பார்த்தார்.
”ஓம்…. வாப்பா சொல்றது மெய்தான்… இந்த இடத்தில் நிறைய பேர் தற்கொலைக்கு முயற்சி செய்கிறார்கள். இந்த ஆற்றுப்பகுதி மிகுதியான ஆழமுடையது. கண்டி நகர சபை இந்த பாலத்திற்கு கீழுள்ள ஆற்றில் படகு சேவையை ஆரம்பிப்பதன் மூலம் சுற்றுலாப் பயணிகளை கவருவதுடன் தற்கொலை செய்ய முயற்சிப்பவர்களைக் கண்காணிக்கவும் இலகுவாக இருக்கும். அப்படியே எங்களுக்கும் ஏதாவது தொழில் வாய்ப்பு கிடைக்கும். வீட்டையாவது ஒழுங்காய் செய்து கொள்ள முடியும். கண்டி ஒரு சுற்றுலா நகரம் எனும் அடிப்படையில் சுற்றுலாப்பயணிகளுடைய / பொதுமக்களுடைய உயிர் முக்கியம் தானே… அதனால உயிர் காக்கும் வீரர்களை (Life Saving Guard) பணிக்கமர்த்த முடியும். உயிர்காக்கும் பணியில் எங்களுக்கு நீண்ட கால அனுபவம் இருக்கு… இதை அரச பணியாக்கி எனக்குக் கொடுத்தால் முழுநேரத் தொழிலாக இதில் ஈடுபட்டு பலரின் உயிரையும் காக்கமுடியும். இப்பொழுது எங்களது உயிருக்கு எவ்விதமான பாதுகாப்பும் இல்லை” என்றார் மகன் முஹமட் நிஷாம்.
ராசிக் பரீடின் சேவை தொடர்பாக சகோதர இன நண்பர் ஜூட் ஜூலியன் பெர்னாண்டோவிடம் கதைத்தபோது “1984 ஆம் ஆண்டிலிருந்து நான் பேரதெனியாவில் வசிக்கிறேன். ராசிக் தம்பி போன்ற நபர்களை இந்தக் காலத்தில் காண்பது மிகவும் அரிது. இன மத வேறுபாடின்றி யாவரையும் காப்பாற்றி வரும் இவர் பலகை வீட்டில் வசிக்கிறார். வெள்ளம் பெருக்கெடுக்கும் காலத்தில் தண்ணீருக்குள் வசிக்கிறார்கள். சமூகத்திற்கு தீங்கு செய்யும் மனிதர்கள் எல்லாம் வசதியாக வாழ்ந்துவரும் இந்தக்காலத்தில் அனைவருக்கும் நன்மை செய்யும் ஒரு மனிதன் ஏழையாக வாழ்வதுவும், வீடின்றி இருப்பதுவும் எமது நாட்டில் மட்டுமே இடம் பெறக்கூடிய ஒன்று. இது எமக்கான சாபமாகும். இதே வேறோரு நாடாக இருந்தால் எத்தனை கெளரவங்கள் குடுத்திருப்பார்கள். ராசிக் தம்பியின் கைகளில் முறிவு உள்ளதால் உலோகங்கள் பூட்டப்பட்டுள்ளன. எனவே இவரின் சேவையைக் கருத்தில் கொண்டு இவரின் மகனுக்காவது ஒரு அரச வேலையை ஏற்படுத்திக்கொடுக்கவேண்டும்.
தற்கொலை பற்றிய விழிப்புணர்வுகளை அதிகம் கொடுக்க வேண்டும். தற்கொலைக்கு முயற்சித்தவர்களுடன் அதிகளவில் பேசி அவர்கள் பேசுவதையும் செவிமடுக்க வேண்டும். நம்முடன் பழகும் நண்பர்கள், உறவினர்கள் முன்பு போல இல்லை, மனச்சோர்வுடன் காணப்படுகிறார்கள் எனத் தெரிந்தால் அவர்களுடன் நாம் நெருங்கிப்பேச வேண்டும். எந்நிலையிலும் நாம் அவர்களுடன் துணை இருப்போம் என உறுதிப்படுத்த வேண்டும். தற்கொலை பற்றிப் பேசுவதால் நாம் தற்கொலை எண்ணத்தை தூண்டுகிறோமோ என்று அச்சப்படத் தேவையில்லை. தன் உயிரைத் தானே மாய்த்துக்கொள்ளுதல் என்பது சட்ட ரீதியாக தண்டணைக்குரிய குற்றமாக இருந்தாலும் அது குணப்படுத்த வேண்டிய மனரீதியான ஒரு சிக்கலே என்று உணரப்பட்டுள்ளது. தற்கொலை தடுக்கப்பட வேண்டிய ஒன்று. நாம் அனைவரும் ஒன்றினைந்தால் இதைத் தடுக்கலாம். ஒன்றிணைவோம்… உயிர்காப்போம்.
iVoice Idea Competition
iVoice is an online platform that encourages youth to discuss social issues and to drive innovative solutions. The platform features stories relating to social issues in Sri Lanka, which are submitted by iVoice contributors and the general public.
The objective of the iVoice Idea Competition is to encourage youth to play a participatory role in solving social issues. After reading a story featured on iVoice, youth can submit their ‘idea’ to help to address the social issue that is highlighted in the story. The ten best ideas will receive seed capital of Rs. 100,000/- each, and mentoring, to support in implementing their ideas.
The majority of articles featured on iVoice relate to a social issue. These stories have a ‘Submit Your Idea’ button at the end of the article, inviting youth to share their innovative ideas on how to address these social issues.
Submitted ideas must be innovative and unique. The ideas must also be practical and implementable by 31 December 2017.
The deadline for submitting an idea is 3 September 2017.
To submit an idea, the following details must be provided through the online form:
Note: Participants can submit any number of ideas; however, only one idea per article is permitted.
Ideas will be evaluated through a competitive process.
