With the rising elderly population of Sri Lanka, the number of dependents who are mostly inactive in contributing to country's economic development keeps increasing. As long as proper systems are not available to recognize and add value to their capacities, they will remain inactive and dependent even if they possess hidden potentials and years of experience in facing challenges. Therefore capacity building and empowerment of elderly citizens to identify their potentials with the aim of inspiring them to contribute to the overall development of the country is a crucial social need.

As an initiative, select one Grama Niladhari Division to launch and implement the concept of empowering the elderly. (Thiragama GN division, Mallawapitiya DSD in Kurunegala District). Identify the population/number of elderly people (above 60 years of age) in the village, with the permission and help of the Village officer (Grama Niladhari). Assess the ratio of men and women belonging to the elderly population. Check on the availability of certain types of community programmes/ village societies for the elderly in the village. (Already available at Thiragama GN division) Contact responsible office bearers of the relevant society (Elders’ Society) and collect data about the members of the Elders’ society in the area. Assess what type of activities they do, participation of the members and what benefits they receive by being members of the Elders’ Society. Organize and conduct awareness programmes for the members of the Elders’ society on “empowering the elderly” by an invited resource person/s. (Provide refreshments for participants) Identify the skills, potentials of the members and create a platform to share their experiences/ ideas and find ways to apply their knowledge when addressing local level issues. Get the participation of governmental and private authorities who are responsible for ensuring the well-being of the community and strengthen the link between those institutions and the elderly community of the village. Conduct workshops (twice a month) to introduce self-employment modes or ways to use the time productively for their development as well as for that of the society. (For example; on producing traditional food items as a small-scale business, home-gardening, maintaining a plant nursery to sell plants, weaving mats & hand-crafts; either as self-help groups or at an individual basis) Encourage the participation and assistance of other family members to enable the elderly for engaging in work they love. Observe the progress of individuals or self-help groups, after one and half months (06 weeks from the commencement) with the participation to workshops and identify 05 inspired, potential individuals or a group showing progress in their productive role. A panel comprising of responsible government officers and other private parties willing to sponsor for their further development will be involved for the selection. Provide material funds and advisory services for the selected members via governmental institutions and private funding firms those who are willing to contribute. Build links with markets/firms to buy their produce and ensure fairness of trade by the involvement of responsible authorities. Appreciate the empowered elderly members within the community and recognize them as leadership figures within the Elders’ society to inspire other individuals. Introduce this concept to other local communities if proven successful and productive.

තරුණ ප්‍රජාව වැනි ඉලක්ක කණ්ඩායම් වෙත කාලීන වටිනාකමින් යුතු තොරතුරු හා සමාජ පණිවිඩ ආදිය නිවැරදිව සන්නිවේදනය නොවීම නිසා ඇතිවන ගැටලුකාරී තත්වයන් වළක්වා ගැනීම ගැටලුවකි. මෙම ව්යාකපෘතිය ක්රියයාත්මක කරන මීගහතැන්න නගරය වනාහි ඉතා දුෂ්කර ග්‍රාමීය ප්‍රදේශ මැදිකරගෙන තිබෙන නගරයකි. එම නගරයට පැමිණෙන හා නගරය හරහා යන ජනයාට ඉක්මණින් හා ආකර්ශනීය ලෙස පණිවුඩ සන්නිවේදනය කිරීම සඳහා L.E.D පුවරු භාවිතා කළ හැකිය. විශේෂයෙන් තරුණ ප්‍රජාව ඉලක්ක කර ගනිමින් සමාජ වියසනයන්ගෙන් ඔවුන් මුදවා ගැනීමට විවිධ සමාජ පණිවිඩ ආදිය ඉදිරිපත් කිරීම මෙහි මූලික අරමුණක්වේ. (උදාහරණයක් ලෙස දුම්කොළ හා මත්වැටි මෙන්ම මත්ද්රුව්ය වලින් සිදුවන හානි පිළිබදව දැනුවත් කිරීම්.) ජනතාවට අවශය වු කාලීන තොරතුරු ද ඉදිරිපත් කිරීමටදහැකියාවඇත.

I have identified potential issue in solid waste management and careless behaviour in bin collection. Bins suppose to collected from households on a weekly basis however it has been noticed that job is not done at right time. Because of this improper collection, public faces lots of problem and its leads to severe diseases and also health issues.

We have great responsibility to protect our environment. Each and every individual shoud take initiative to reduce environmental pollution. To overcome this problem, i have planned to implement idea. For this idea we need to ask help from public that who are interested in social work, grama sevaha and relevent authority.(eg: municipal council) I have planned to keep very large bins in the particular place in each village. I need to aware among public to put bins in that large bins regularly. And also need to aware relevant authority to collect bins on weekly basis. I have planned to nominate two persons from each village to observe the proper bin collection on weekly basis. If it is not done by relevant authority immediately the resource persons will inform to grama sevaha. Grama sevaha will complain to relevant authority about improper bin collection . Through these 3 resource persons we can observe the bin collection from each village. I have planned to issue a feedback form to households. People also can write their feedback about the bin collection provided by the relevant authority. At the end of the month we can collect those forms through grama sevaha. This idea is to start with 3 villages and if it is successful we can introduce to many villages. save the planet.

கிராமப்புறங்களிலும் ,நகர்ப்புறங்களிலும் வெளியேற்றப்படும் களிவுககளை கழிவுகளாக ஓரிடத்தில் கொட்டி சூழலை மாசு படுத்துவதை தவிர்த்து வீடுகளில் வெளியேற்றப்படும் கழிவுகளை வீடுகளிலேயே பயனுடையத்தாக மாற்றிக்கொள்வதன் மூலம் அதாவது வீடுகளில் அனேகமாக உக்கலடைய கூடிய கழிவுகளே வெளியேற்றப்படுகின்றன இவற்றை வீடுகளிலேயே சேதனை பசளையாக மாற்றிக்கொள்ள முடியும் இவ்வாறு சேதனை பசளையாக மாற்றுவதன் மூலம் நாம் எமது வீடுகளில் சிறுய வீட்டு தோட்டங்களை அமைத்து அவற்றுக்கு இதனை பயன்படுத்த முடியும் இதன் மூலம் இயற்கையான உணவினைக்கூட பெற்றுக்கொள்ள முடியும் .இவற்றை கிராமப்புறங்களிலும் ,நகர்ப்புறங்களில் வீடுகளிளும் செய்துகொள்ளலாம் . இதேபோல் ஏனைய கழிவுகளை கூட இவ்வாறு பயனுடையதாக மாற்றுவதன் மூலமும் ,திண்மக் கழிவுகளை மீள் சுழற்ற்சி ,மீள் உற்பத்திக்கு பயன்படுத்துவதன் மூலமும் கழிவுகளை வெகுவாக குறைத்து மேற்ற்கண்ட பிரட்சினைகளுக்கு தீர்வினைப் பெற்றுக்கொள்ள முடியும் என்பது என்னுடைய கருத்தாக உள்ளது.

Majority of Sri Lankan stick to traditional financial products but why? Majority of the adult population in Sri Lanka aren't educated about the financial markets and as a result of this, they miss many opportunities they come across. Why don't we educate our people, these products which will help the Sri Lankan economy to grow.

Conduct educational workshops in schools about the benefits and opportunities of investing in stock market, why people should not only save in traditional saving account and move to more hybrid accounts. Get the help of financial institutes in setting up seminars in rural areas to educate the young generation who are about to get into the society and the adult population on finance. Financial literacy is crucial to help ensure people save enough to provide adequate income. Lets start teaching financial literacy cause it matters and it can have a huge impact on the economy as whole. To initiate the project, have the first seminar in one leading Colombo school to advance level students. (Colombo Royal)

Women – particularly in a society like Sri Lanka which places high regard on tradition – women are discriminated against systematically. They are abused, are exploited, and do not have the same rights, nor afforded the same opportunities as their male counterparts. This problem looks at a discriminated segment amongst women – those who have children due to rape – who are shunned by society and receive no support from their families or the government.

Funding for childcare is dwindling, particularly for single mothers who have given birth out of wedlock – either due to the lack of sex education or rape. Moreover, opportunities for these women to gain any sustainable employment is minimal. The pilot programme for idea is two-fold. Part 01 – Setting up a micro-finance scheme for women who lack support on raising children and finding employment – identified through religious and medical sources – who have become victim to rape and given birth as a consequence. These women will gain access to entrepreneurs and mentors who will guide them in pursuing their ideas and making it a reality. It is also suggested providing another group of women with no marketable skills, basic training and education in order to assist them to gain better employment prospects. Part 02 – Enabling a creche service for the children of these women, where they will have access to free education, as well as access to therapy (art/music therapy) in order to deal with their circumstances. Many volunteer and non-profit organizations exist which can assist in this matter, as well as companies and individuals who can donate any required equipment (Ex: Atlas) However, this idea is broad and understands the time and financial constraints, and therefore allows for an initial implementation period to occur during the 03 month period in order to gain more funding and support to this project. Therefore, it will utilize the initial nucleus fund to partner up with organizations, MNC's etc. to create a public awareness campaign and gain support and funding in order to implement this project on a larger scale. As a case study, 2 women can be selected initially in order to show investors and the public how this idea can benefit the community and uplift the women and society simultaneously.

There are many slums in Colombo Municipal area, such as Mattakkuliya, Grandpass, Thotalanga, Maligawatha, etc. Most the children of these areas are with some major issues - drug dealing, pornography issues, sexual harassment, child abuse, smuggling, etc- ! The basic reason is they don't attend school, because of their family financial crisis and lack of education of the parents,

I'm having a plan to select 10 children and their families for a successful operation. (As this is the first plan, I'd prefer selecting Maligawatha area) Tasks: 1. To find out the 10 families, through every available networks. (Teachers, Mosque -Temple-Church-Kovil heads, The model youth of such areas, Police officers, etc) 2. The first hard mission is to reach them - Through taking a 2,000 LKR worthy dry ration pack to their home, they'd welcome us with a smile! 3. It's a must to get the real story of the entire family. 4. To give some motivation for family members in such a needy way (father - earning plans/ mother - at least for managing the house/ the child - to study) 5. Finding a suitable school. 6. Making arrangements to enroll them in schools. 7. Donating the full school pack (Stationary items, School bag, Two sets of School Uniform, A voucher for pair of shoes - worthy 5,000 LKR) to the children 8. Taking them to the school with their parents and making them enjoy the day with a simple meal (1,000 LKR per family) 9. A fortnightly monitoring plan 10. After 6 months, felicitating them for their achievements. Hosting them a casual dinner with a Minister (Minister of Education or MInister of Higher Education or another relevant minister)
